    Project Background: Higher Networking Requirements for Outdoor Automation Equipment

    An outdoor automation equipment manufacturer was developing an industrial control system deployed in an open environment.

    The system included multiple Ethernet-connected field devices, such as industrial control units, data acquisition equipment, and field terminals.

    Unlike indoor factory networks, outdoor automation installations may face more challenging conditions, including:

    • Exposure to rain, moisture, and dust;
    • Limited installation space;
    • The need to place network nodes close to field equipment;
    • Higher maintenance requirements for outdoor devices.

    Therefore, the project required an Ethernet switch that could provide both industrial networking capability and environmental protection for outdoor deployment.

    Project Challenges: Why Conventional Ethernet Switches Were Not Suitable

    Waterproof and Dust Protection Requirements

    In industrial environments, network connection points are often exposed to surrounding conditions.

    Commercial Ethernet switches with standard RJ45 interfaces and general-purpose housings are mainly designed for controlled indoor environments.

    For outdoor automation systems, engineers need to consider:

    • Housing protection;
    • Connector design;
    • Operating temperature range;
    • Installation conditions.

    Therefore, an industrial Ethernet switch with protective design was required.

    Industrial Connectivity Requirements

    Outdoor automation systems often place network devices close to machines, control cabinets, or field nodes.

    Compared with conventional office networking equipment, industrial applications require:

    • Suitable connectors for field environments;
    • More robust connection methods;
    • Easier integration with industrial equipment.

    M12 connectors are commonly used in industrial automation applications where protected equipment connections are required.

    Solution: Olycom IM-WS080WGM IP67 M12 Industrial Ethernet Switch

    To address the outdoor automation networking requirements, the project selected the Olycom IM-WS080WGM as the industrial Ethernet switching solution.

    The switch features an IP67 protection design and M12 industrial Ethernet interfaces for applications requiring protected field networking connections.

    Solution Design

    1. IP67 Protection for Outdoor Deployment

    The key requirement of the project was improving the suitability of network equipment for outdoor installation.

    The IM-WS080WGM features:

    • IP67 protection rating;
    • Metal housing design;
    • Industrial compact structure.

    The IP67 design provides an important reference when evaluating equipment deployment in outdoor industrial environments.

    The complete protection level should also consider:

    • M12 cables;
    • Connector installation;
    • Overall equipment structure.

    2. M12 Interface for Industrial Field Connectivity

    The switch provides eight M12 Ethernet ports with 8-pin A-Code M12 connectors.

    Compared with standard office networking equipment, M12 connectivity is more suitable for:

    • Machine-side installation;
    • Automation control nodes;
    • Space-limited industrial environments.

    In this application, the switch acts as an industrial Ethernet connection node between field devices.

    3. Gigabit Networking for Multiple Devices

    Outdoor automation systems often require connections between multiple Ethernet devices.

    The IM-WS080WGM provides:

    • Eight 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet ports;
    • 20Gbps switching capacity;
    • 14.8Mpps forwarding rate.

    These specifications support network planning according to device quantity and communication requirements.

    4. Wide Temperature Design for Field Conditions

    Outdoor equipment installations may experience significant temperature changes.

    The IM-WS080WGM supports:

    • Operating temperature: -40°C to 75°C;
    • Operating humidity: 5% to 95%, non-condensing.

    Engineers can evaluate these specifications according to local environmental conditions.

    5. Managed Features for Industrial Network Maintenance

    Beyond basic switching, industrial networks often require configuration and maintenance functions.

    The IM-WS080WGM supports:

    • SNMP;
    • Web management;
    • CLI;
    • VLAN;
    • QoS;
    • Port isolation.

    These features support:

    • Network segmentation;
    • Traffic management;
    • Device configuration.

    Application Outcome: Building an Outdoor Industrial Ethernet Network

    By deploying an IP67 M12 industrial switch, this type of outdoor automation system can achieve:

    Protected Industrial Network Deployment

    The switch provides specifications for evaluating deployment in outdoor industrial environments.

    Multi-device Ethernet Connectivity

    Eight Gigabit M12 ports support connections between multiple field devices.

    Managed Industrial Network Architecture

    VLAN, QoS, and SNMP functions support network configuration and maintenance.

    Conclusion

    For outdoor automation equipment, Ethernet switches need to provide more than data transmission capability. They must also match environmental conditions and industrial installation requirements.

    Compared with standard networking equipment, IP67 M12 industrial switches focus on:

    • Waterproof and dust protection;
    • Industrial connectivity;
    • Wide temperature operation;
    • Outdoor deployment requirements.

    With IP67 protection, M12 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, and industrial network management functions, the Olycom IM-WS080WGM provides an industrial Ethernet connectivity option for outdoor automation applications.
