How a Managed Industrial PoE Switch Solved PTZ Camera Power, Monitoring, and Network Reliability Challenges

    Market Background
As smart transportation, industrial automation, and intelligent security systems continue to expand, modern surveillance networks are no longer limited to simple camera connectivity. Today’s outdoor surveillance projects increasingly rely on high-power PTZ cameras, wireless bridges, intelligent sensors, and edge devices that demand stable power delivery, intelligent network management, and uninterrupted communication.
For system integrators, the biggest challenge is no longer simply “connecting devices.” The real challenge is maintaining long-term network stability while reducing maintenance costs and preventing unexpected downtime.
In outdoor and industrial deployments, conventional PoE switches often create several operational problems:
    • Insufficient PoE power for high-consumption PTZ cameras
    • No visibility into real-time PoE power status
    • Difficult troubleshooting after device failures
    • No proactive alarm or notification mechanism
    • Single-point network failures interrupting surveillance systems
    • Equipment instability caused by heat, surge events, or power fluctuations
For critical surveillance projects such as transportation hubs, highways, industrial parks, and city security systems, these problems directly impact operational reliability and maintenance efficiency.
    Customer Challenges
One of our customers, a transportation security system integrator, was deploying multiple outdoor PTZ cameras across a large monitoring area.
The deployment environment included roadside cabinets, outdoor poles, and remote monitoring points exposed to extreme weather conditions. While the project initially used standard PoE switches, several operational problems quickly emerged.

Challenge 1: High-Power PTZ Cameras Frequently Restarted

The PTZ cameras required high PoE power during zooming, rotating, infrared switching, and night operation. Traditional PoE switches could not provide stable power under peak load conditions.

    As a result:

    • Cameras restarted unexpectedly
    • Video streams became unstable
    • Some cameras disconnected during nighttime operation
    • Maintenance engineers had difficulty identifying the root cause

The customer realized that insufficient PoE power management was affecting the reliability of the entire surveillance network.

Challenge 2: No Real-Time PoE Monitoring

The customer had no visibility into port-level PoE status.

When a device malfunctioned, maintenance teams had to physically inspect each cabinet to determine whether the issue was caused by:

    • Camera failure
    • Cable damage
    • Insufficient power
    • Port overload
    • Environmental issues

This significantly increased maintenance time and operational costs.

Challenge 3: Lack of Alarm and Notification Functions

The existing switches could not automatically notify administrators when abnormal events occurred.

    For example:

    • PoE overload events
    • Fiber uplink disconnections
    • Power failures
    • Device overheating
    • Camera offline incidents

Without alarm mechanisms, failures were often discovered only after surveillance interruptions occurred.

The customer wanted a switch capable of proactive fault notification and centralized event management.

    Challenge 4: Network Redundancy Requirements

The surveillance network relied heavily on long-distance fiber transmission between monitoring points.

However, a single fiber failure could interrupt multiple cameras simultaneously.

The customer needed a redundant industrial Ethernet solution capable of rapid recovery to maintain continuous video transmission.

    Our Solution

To address these operational challenges, we recommended the OLYCOM IM-FP21008GW Managed Industrial PoE Fiber Switch.

Unlike conventional PoE switches, the IM-FP21008GW combines high-power PoE delivery, intelligent management, industrial protection, and alarm functionality into a single platform designed specifically for outdoor industrial surveillance networks.

How the Solution Solved the Customer’s Problems

    1. Stable High-Power PoE for PTZ Cameras

The IM-FP21008GW supports IEEE802.3af/at/bt with up to 90W PoE output per port and a total power budget of 750W.

    This allowed the customer to:

    • Reliably power multiple PTZ cameras simultaneously
    • Eliminate external power adapters
    • Simplify outdoor cabinet deployment
    • Reduce wiring complexity

More importantly, intelligent PoE power management automatically optimized power allocation across ports, preventing overload conditions and improving long-term system stability.

    2. Real-Time PoE Port Monitoring and Remote Troubleshooting

One of the most important improvements was real-time PoE visibility.

The customer could now remotely monitor:

    • Port power consumption
    • Voltage and current status
    • Connected device activity
    • Port overload conditions
    • Abnormal power fluctuations

When abnormal behavior occurred, administrators could remotely reboot specific PoE ports instead of sending engineers to the site.

This dramatically reduced troubleshooting time and maintenance costs.

    3. Alarm Relay and Proactive Fault Notification

The customer specifically required alarm functionality because many monitoring sites were unmanned.

    The IM-FP21008GW provided:

    • Alarm relay output
    • Syslog warning messages
    • Email event notifications
    • Real-time system logging

Whenever issues occurred — such as fiber disconnection, PoE overload, or abnormal temperature — the system automatically triggered notifications.

This transformed the customer’s maintenance strategy from passive troubleshooting into proactive network management.

    4. Industrial Reliability in Harsh Outdoor Environments

Unlike commercial switches, the IM-FP21008GW was specifically designed for industrial outdoor deployment.

    Key industrial protections included:

    • Operating temperature from -40°C to 75°C
    • 6KV surge protection
    • Redundant power inputs
    • Thermal shutdown protection
    • Industrial DIN-rail design

These features significantly improved network stability in outdoor cabinets exposed to heat and electrical interference.

    5. Fiber Redundancy and Continuous Surveillance

To prevent single-point failures, the customer deployed ERPS ring topology using the switch’s fiber uplinks.

The IM-FP21008GW supports G.8032 ERPS with recovery times below 50ms.

    As a result:

    • Video transmission remained uninterrupted
    • Network recovery became nearly instantaneous
    • Surveillance reliability improved significantly
    Customer Feedback

After deployment, the customer reported major improvements in network reliability and maintenance efficiency.

    Key results included:

    • PTZ cameras operated stably without unexpected restarts
    • Real-time PoE monitoring reduced troubleshooting time
    • Alarm notifications allowed faster response to failures
    • Fiber redundancy minimized network downtime
    • Maintenance costs were significantly reduced

The customer also highlighted the value of centralized PoE management, especially for remote outdoor monitoring sites.

    Conclusion

Modern PTZ surveillance networks require far more than basic PoE connectivity.

Customers now demand intelligent monitoring, proactive alarms, industrial reliability, and uninterrupted network communication.

The OLYCOM IM-FP21008GW successfully addressed these real-world operational challenges through:

    • High-power IEEE802.3bt PoE
    • Real-time PoE management
    • Alarm relay and event notification
    • Industrial-grade protection
    • Fiber redundancy networking

For transportation, industrial monitoring, smart city, and outdoor surveillance applications, the IM-FP21008GW provides a reliable and intelligent networking solution designed for long-term operational stability.
